More often than not, we don’t think about our water heaters until it’s too late. Imagine getting up, turning on your shower, and there’s NO HOT WATER! Uh oh!!! Now what? Unfortunately, water heaters don’t last forever. We’re here to answer any questions you have about water heaters and water heater maintenance:

1. What type of water heater is best for my home?
2. How do I know when to replace my water heater?
3. How often should I have my water heater serviced?
4. How can I extend the life of my water heater?

What different types of water heaters are available for my home?

There are a few different types of water heaters available on the market, and which one you choose depends entirely on your preferences and budget. Conventional water heaters can be powered by electricity, gas, propane, and oil, which makes them accessible for almost any home. They are usually a more affordable option, but prices vary based on what type of energy you’re using. These are also not as fuel efficient as other options.

Tankless heaters are a great option for homes where there is limited space for a tank to be stored. They also can run off many different energy sources, but are not the best option if you want to run hot water to multiple sources at once.

Hybrid water heaters (also known as heat pumps) pump and compress the air around them to create heat in addition to regular water storage. These are generally more expensive than other water heaters, but end up saving you money in the long run by heating water more efficiently. When to Replace your water heater:

1. Age: the majority of water heaters last 8-10 years.
2. Rusty water, valve/inlet, or pipes.
3. Noise from the tank due to sediment buildup.
4. Water around the base of the water heater/leaks.
5. No longer heats adequately.

Servicing your water heater:

The frequency depends on the size of the tank and the amount of hot water used. Generally an inspection should be done every six months and a drain & flush annually.

How can I keep my water heater running smoothly?

The best way to extend the life of your water heater is by scheduling regular water heater maintenance appointments. During these calls Clear Air Conditioning & Heating will drain the tank if needed and remove any buildup in and around the heater that could impact performance. If you have a tankless water heater we will also clean or replace the air filters. If you have a gas or electric heater we’ll perform any necessary temperature adjustments to keep your unit functioning at its best.
