R22 Phase Out

R22 Phase Out

Chances are you’re already aware R22 refrigerant has been phased out of production. What does this mean to you? Below are some questions & answers that consumers frequently ask and we’re here to help you understand. Honest. Simple. Straight forward.

Questions & HONEST Answers

Q: What does the January 1, 2020 – R22 phase out mean?
A: This simply means production & import of R22 will end in the USA effective 1/01/2020

Q: I heard R22 will be “Illegal” after the phase out date?
A: This is not entirely true. Suppliers that have R22 in stock can keep & continue to use it without worry. However, suppliers cannot import or produce new R22. Making availability very limited.

Q: Does this mean I can’t get my a/c fixed?
A: No. Most AC Vendors and Service Companies have R22 in stock, they can continue to use to make repairs. But prices of R22 will continue to rise over the next couple of years as the stock runs out.

Q: Do I have to replace my a/c system in 2020?
A: No. There is no EPA requirement to get a new system or covert existing functioning R22 units. If you have an R22 system and you’re maintaining it properly, it can last you many more years. As with all refrigerant, it does not simply evaporate, therefore, proper maintenance is key to making it last. However, when you’re ready we’re here to help with FREE estimates on new equipment.

Q: Does my R22 refrigerant have to be removed or replaced?
A: No. The only reason you would need to replace the refrigerant or the unit is due to a major failure, such as a large unrepairable refrigerant leak, loss of all refrigerant, compressor failure, or other major components failing.

Q: What about a retrofit or substitution refrigerant?
A: Simply replacing R-22 refrigerant with R-410A is not recommended due to its higher working pressure and retrofitting a unit can be as costly as a completely new system. Clear Air does not recommend either of these options.

The best thing you can do if you have an R22 system is properly maintain your unit to prevent leaks, routine maintenance is far less expensive than emergency repairs.
